A Word From Our Executive Director

Darlene M. Steele

As we approach the last month of the year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many ways our Carter G. Woodson School community continues to thrive. Over this past year and a half, I have been thrilled to lead the school and build meaningful connections with everyone. As a mother myself, I take pride every day in ensuring your children are treated like my own. When you hurt, please know that I hurt as well; when you are celebrating, please know I am cheering you on. My heart for our children and our community carries a consistent weight of care, responsibility, and unwavering commitment.

First, I want to express my gratitude for the dedication of our staff, the partnership of our community, and the unwavering support of our families.

This time of year always reminds me of the importance of gratitude and service. Our students, staff, and families have demonstrated resilience and creativity in so many ways this year, from excelling in academics to participating in enriching programs that help them grow as leaders, thinkers, and compassionate citizens.

I also want to acknowledge that this season can bring added stress for families, especially in uncertain times. As a school, we remain committed to being a safe, welcoming, and supportive space for every child and family. If your household is facing challenges; whether related to finances, immigration concerns, or other personal matters, please know that we are here to help connect you to resources and support as they are available. Our goal is always to ensure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

For our families, I encourage you to take time during the breaks to celebrate achievements, nurture curiosity, and foster connections that strengthen both learning and family bonds. Even small moments, such as reading together, exploring new ideas, or engaging in acts of kindness, can leave a lasting impact on our scholars.

We cannot do this without each and every one of you. Building strong partnerships and ensuring that you are never alone is critical. As we continue to improve the culture at CGW, it is our hope that we are activating the power of togetherness. I am especially grateful to our community partners and sponsors whose support makes so many of these opportunities possible.

To our community partners, sponsors, and donors; we need you. We need your consistent investment in the future of our school community in any way you can give. This could come in many forms, and we appreciate each one: whether it’s thinking of us when grants open, donating funds or supplies, providing connections, or networking to ensure Carter G. Woodson is introduced to the right opportunities. It is my dream that we can be the HUB for our community in all things related to growth and sustainability, preparing our students to become successful citizens.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we will continue to foster a school community that celebrates excellence, uplifts every voice, and honors the values of scholarship, service, and sisterhood.
