As a teacher here at Carter G. Woodson School, I take a very particular pride in the
celebration of Black History Month, as it was the creation of the namesake of our school. Manypeople have a misconception about Black History Month; that we were given the shortest month of the calendar to celebrate. When in reality, we gave ourselves, through Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Negro History Week in 1926, which expanded into Black History month in 1976. This was not just a time to learn Black History, as the learning was meant to happen throughout the year, this was meant to be a time to come together and celebrate the work and accomplishments of our people throughout history past and present. We should be very proud that here we are, 100 years later still celebrating the richness of our culture, our achievements and our history.
Here at Carter G. Woodson School, we embody the philosophy and pedagogy of Dr.
Carter Godwin Woodson, it’s interwoven into the fabric of our educational approach. We believe in a curriculum that centers the achievement of our people and community. This approach towards education is meant to inspire student learning on a higher level and create a sense of responsibility, that these pupils will go on to become important agents of positive change within our communities. That sense of knowing yourself in order to empower yourself and your community comes from a commitment to education that we learned from the teachings and work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
I’ve taught at this school long enough to have had multiple training on how to integrate his pedagogy into our classrooms. I’ve also been here long enough to see the positive impacts of such an approach to education. Many successful people were developed right here at this school, with the pedagogy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson. We have a staff that is very intentional about teaching equity through education and I do believe that the spirit of Dr. Carter G. Woodson truly lives through our school and community here. So let us celebrate in unity and pride. We have so much to be proud of, as we continue to do this work.
Thank you Dr. Carter G.Woodson!
With Truth and Service,
Ms. Crowell
