Director of Sustainability Innovation & Agriculture
Agriculture has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up on a farm in Gates County, North Carolina, in a community with just one stoplight. That upbringing shaped how I see the world and helped me understand the connection between the land, the food we eat, and the people around us.
That connection led me to North Carolina A&T State University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and my master’s degree in Agricultural Education. My education gave me the opportunity to build on my farming roots and bring together two interests that guide my work today: agriculture and teaching.
As the Sustainability Innovation & Agriculture Director at Carter G. Woodson School, I get to help students discover agriculture through hands-on experiences. On The Farm, learning goes beyond a textbook. Students can plant, observe, ask questions, and see how their decisions affect what grows. A garden bed becomes a place to explore science, practice problem-solving, and learn the value of patience and responsibility.
I want our students to understand that agriculture offers many possibilities—from growing food and caring for animals to education, technology, and environmental stewardship. Whether they pursue a career in agriculture or simply become more curious about where their food comes from, these experiences can give them knowledge they carry into everyday life.
The Farm also connects our school with the wider community. Growing fresh food creates opportunities to share, learn from one another, and make healthy food more accessible. It is meaningful to see students take part in work that reaches beyond their classroom.
My own journey began on a farm in a small community. Here at CGWS, I’m excited to help our students discover where their curiosity—and a little time with their hands in the soil—might take them.
