Carter G. Woodson School recently hosted a successful Mind Over Matter Book Event, bringing together students in grades 9–12 for an engaging and meaningful conversation centered on teen mental health and wellness. Held in our gymnasium, the event created space for students to hear directly from professionals and community leaders about the importance of mental health awareness, available resources, and practical support systems for teens.

We were honored to welcome keynote speaker Alexia Mitchell, who opened the program with an insightful lecture on teen mental health and wellness, including medical, psychological, and counseling interventions students can rely on.
Following the keynote, students led a moderated panel discussion featuring an incredible lineup of guests:
Andy Hagler, Executive Director, Mental Health America of Forsyth
Miguel Amala, Winston-Salem Police Officer
Tonya Hardy, Psychologist
Alease Wright, Therapist
Dr. Elizabeth Reed, Published Author
A special highlight of this event was that it was fully student-led as part of their coursework, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in event planning, hosting, and facilitating important community conversations.
Thank you to all of our speakers, panelists, staff, and students who helped make this event impactful and memorable.
