At Carter G. Woodson, we know the beauty of the performing arts and how it can inspire and create better students. As a school, we have a marching band, a jazz band, and a pep band. Our band director, Michael Hinson, is a classically trained jazz musician. He has grown our musical program into a state-wide recognized program. Our students learn to explore America’s musical roots with jazz. All elementary and middle school students learn to read music and are exposed to the various instruments in the band program.
Carter G. Woodson has a thriving orchestral program. Students are taught in small group and one-on-one sessions with various wind instruments. The orchestral program is led by a classically trained violinist, Nahamah Jackson. Ms. Jackson teaches and directs the school orchestra. Carter G. Woodson has partnered with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Ameri-Corps Artists, and the local Winston-Salem public symphony.
